Elon Musk’s brain chip company Neuralink has announced the launch of a patient selection process for the first human trials of such chips. As reported in statement Neuralink, the company recently received permission to recruit volunteers for clinical trials from an independent expert council. Permission to conduct human trials received back in May from the FDA – Food and Drug Administration.
The company says it is seeking volunteers from those with paralyzed arms and legs (tetraplegia) due to spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. During the tests, patients will be implanted with a neural interface (BCI), a microchip for management external devices with the power of thought, to the area of the brain that is responsible for movement. Thanks to this, patients will be able to control the mouse cursor or computer keyboard with the power of thought. The study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the technology, Neuralink said in a statement. The company does not specify how many patients it is enrolling. We only know that the entire testing process will take about six years.
Previously, Elon Musk talked about the wide possibilities of brain chips, with the help of which it will allegedly be possible to cope with such health problems and conditions as obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia. However, experts agree that all this may not be achieved in the coming years, since obtaining a license for the commercial use of brain chips will take at least ten years.
