Opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is serving a sentence in maximum security penal colony No. 6 in the Vladimir region, said that letters from his wife Yulia were not being given to him. The colony administration explained that the letters were confiscated for censorship reasons.
“The next letter from Navalnaya Yu.B. cannot be handed to me and seized by censorship, since it contains signs of preparation for a crime. All recent letters suffered this fate,” says Navalny’s Telegram channel.
On November 2, Alexei Navalny said that the colony administration seized 15 letters due to signs of “preparation to commit crimes.” Some of the seized letters were addressed to Yulia Navalnaya and their son Zakhar, as well as the editor-in-chief of Mediazona Sergei Smirnov (the publication and the journalist are recognized as foreign agents).
In February 2021, Alexei Navalny was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison in the Yves Rocher case (fraud; Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). In March 2022, he was sentenced to nine years on new charges of fraud and insulting a judge (Article 297). In August of this year, the opposition sentenced to 19 years in a special regime colony on charges of extremism.
