A newly discovered asteroid roughly the size of an Olympic pool has a “small chance” of colliding with Earth in 23 years, which could happen on Valentine’s Day in 2046.
Such a forecast should be made by NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordinating Bureau.
The chance of an asteroid hitting Earth is 1 in 625, according to data from the European Space Agency, although NASA’s Sentry system put the odds closer to 1 in 560.
But the space object, named 2023 DW, is the only object on the agency’s risk list that ranks 1 out of 10 on the Turin Impact Hazard Scale, a metric for classifying an object’s predicted risk of impact with Earth. All other objects are rated 0 points on the Turin scale.
