Nani frankly told MK correspondents about her last conversation with the artist and the secret signal that he sent her from intensive care.
“I can’t even speak anymore: tears are constantly flowing,” Nani admitted. I don’t know how to get over his passing. We all knew that Buba was already very ill. But still, when it happens, it is very difficult to survive.
– Vakhtang complained about his health?
No, he never complained. Even when he was on dialysis, he got up, got into the car and drove to the concert. Never said how difficult it was for him. Only a couple of months ago, when we performed together in Baku, he told me the words that I still remember.
– What did he say?
– He came up and quietly said: “Nani, you know, I can’t walk anymore. It’s very hard for me!” But we all hoped for a miracle. I saw that he could hardly get up and go to the stage. There he transformed. On stage, he was such a lively person: none of the spectators could have imagined that five minutes ago he could hardly get up from his chair. I tell him: “You are definitely Kobzon!” Joseph was also seriously ill, but he performed until the last. Booba too. He was extraordinary. And how much strength was in him internally that he was in such a serious condition for eight years! He had a whole bunch of diseases. Both the kidneys and the lungs suffered, did not give him the opportunity to live a full life.
Has he been in a coma in recent days?
Yes, in a coma. But not for very long. He was in a coma for two or three days, he was connected to a ventilator. And then he came out of this state, began to breathe on his own. We did not understand what would happen next. They thought that was it – he got out. And that was his last breath. And the way he looked: I still have his eyes before my eyes. I called his daughter Marina on the phone every day, inquired about his condition. Once Marina was near him in the hospital and connected me with him. He couldn’t talk. She said, “Buba, Nani wants to come to you. Do you want her to come? If you want, blink!” He smiled and blinked his eyes! This was his signal. He was waiting for me to come. Wanted to see me. But we didn’t make it!
Was your daughter by his side all the time?
— Yes, all the time. It is very difficult for her now. My son and wife will now fly to Tbilisi. They live in Canada, in Toronto. We barely got plane tickets – now it is difficult with this.
– When did Vakhtang’s health worsen?
– Before the holidays. He celebrated the New Year not at home, he was in the hospital. He has been very ill for the last two months. And before that everything was fine. In October, we even went on tour together: we performed, laughed – everything was fine. I remember my friend came, who was friends with Buba too. I was invited to a restaurant: “Let’s go sit!” Buba told him: “We will definitely go!”. He loved to be in company. He was a loving person.
– They say that Kikabidze could not survive the death of his wife?
— No, it didn’t affect him so much that he left after her. This disease took him out of life. Of course, he was worried when Ira left. They have lived together all their lives. She was so wise, charming – clever in everything. Booba held on to her. Then she was unconscious for some time – she was very sick. Then he suffered a lot, he was always near her. When she passed away, he continued to live a normal life. He gave concerts. He recently had four or five concerts in Israel. That’s the kind of person he was. No matter how much he hurt or suffered, he still went on stage. Performances treated him!
