Climatologist Gribanov spoke about possible measures to solve the problem
In the Urals, in the Trans-Urals and Siberia, forest fires continue to blaze. Dozens of hectares of forest are burning in the Kurgan, Tyumen and Sverdlovsk regions. Konstantin Gribanov, a specialist in the laboratory of climate and environmental physics of the Ural Federal University, told MK about why it flared up right there and right now.
According to the scientist, the natural disaster was caused primarily by two factors. Firstly, it is hot and dry weather that has persisted in the regions for quite a long time. The specialist noted that a similar problem was encountered on the North American continent: now powerful fires are blazing in the north of the United States and in Canada. But the human factor also played a role.
– At the same time, it is not always possible to say with certainty when fires occur due to the negligence and frivolity of people, and when – by chance, – the scientist emphasized.
Konstantin Gribanov recalled that at the end of April in the village of Logoushka, Kurgan Region, the cause of the fire, apparently, was sparks released by a diesel locomotive. The grass caught fire, then the trees, and then the fire spread to residential buildings. At least 76 residential buildings burned down. It was almost impossible to foresee such a turn of events.
At the same time, the scientist believes, a certain effect could be achieved by toughening the punishment in cases where fires occur due to human carelessness.
In general, according to Gribanov, the deployment of a large satellite constellation, which would constantly monitor the situation, could contribute to solving the problem. There are satellites that monitor the situation now both in Russia and in the United States, but, firstly, they are not enough, and secondly, they are not able to “notice” a fire in a small area, for example, 10 by 10 meters. In addition to the actual satellite constellation, a powerful ground-based infrastructure is needed in order to analyze information received from space online and transmit it to emergency services in a timely manner.
