Tom Sizemore, star of Saving Private Ryan, has died at the age of 61 following a brain aneurysm. The actor, best known for his roles as tough guys in war films and action films including Black Hawk Down, has also had a turbulent personal life.

Actor Tom Sizemore, best known for his roles in Saving Private Ryan and Relic, has died at the age of 61, his manager confirmed in a statement.

“It is with great sadness and sorrow that I must report that actor Thomas Edward Sizemore… passed away peacefully today in his sleep at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank. His brother Paul and twin boys Jayden and Jagger (17) were by his side,” Sizemore spokesman Charles Lago said.

According to The Guardian, Sizemore was in a coma in the intensive care unit at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering a brain aneurysm on February 18.

And on February 28, his spokesman Charles Lago said that doctors had told the actor’s family that “there is no more hope.”

At the time, Lago said: “Today, the doctors told his family that there was no more hope and recommended that they make the decision to end life. The family is now resolving issues related to the end of life.”

Born in Detroit in 1961, Tom Sizemore gained a reputation as a tough guy with his roles in war and action films in the 1990s and 2000s. He had small roles as law enforcement officers in Point Break and True Romance, as well as larger roles as a detective in the cutting-edge thriller Natural Born Killers and a member of a heist team in Heat.

Sizemore’s first major role was as another cop: a detective in the horror film Relic, in which a vicious monster causes massacre in a museum. He then landed a prominent role in Saving Private Ryan as a stand-in for Tom Hanks’ character, turning down Terrence Malick’s war film The Thin Red Line for the role.

He later had roles in Black Hawk Down, Splinter and Mark Felt: The Man Who Tore Down the White House. More recently, Sizemore has appeared in several television shows. In 2017, he appeared as insurance agent Anthony Sinclair in the third season of Twin Peaks.

Tom Sizemore’s tumultuous personal life has led to him gaining a reputation for violence and substance abuse. In 2003, he was found guilty of domestic violence and criminal threats against his then girlfriend Heidi Fleiss and sentenced to six months in prison. And in 2017, he was again found guilty of domestic violence and received a three-year suspended sentence. He was repeatedly arrested for drug use, and in 2007 was sentenced to 16 months in prison for possession of methamphetamine.

Sizemore was married to Maeve Quinlan from 1996 to 1999 and has two children.
