Mourning declared in Yakutia in connection with the death of the first President Mikhail Nikolaev

The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, declared four days of mourning in connection with the death of the first president of the republic, Mikhail Nikolaev. He was 85 years old. Mourning last from 5 to 8 August inclusive.

Local TV channels showed a video message from Aisen Nikolaev in connection with the death of Mikhail Nikolaev. “There is no person in the modern history of Yakutia who would do more for the multinational people of Yakutia. There is no leader who would be so close and dear to ordinary people, ”— said acting head of the republic.

Mikhail Nikolaev was born on November 13, 1937 in the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He worked as deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Yakut ASSR, minister of agriculture of the republic, secretary of the Yakut regional committee of the CPSU. In 1989 he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic, in December 1991 – President of Yakutia. He held this post until 2002. After that, until 2010, he was deputy chairman of the Federation Council, in 2011-2016 he worked as a deputy of the State Duma. After that, he served as state adviser to Yakutia. Member of United Russia.

For Mikhail Nikolaev was legislated status of the first president of Yakutia. He had the right to attend legislative meetings and other official events.
