Residents of the Russian capital are increasingly voluntarily donating wild exotic animals, from primates to reptiles, to the Rehabilitation Center. Raccoons, on the other hand, often have to be rescued directly from the streets – Moscow is already catching up with New York in their number, said Sergey Burmistrov, head of the biodiversity conservation department of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection.
As part of the Moscow Urban Forum, he told reporters that the raccoon is becoming a common animal on the streets of Moscow. “We are already catching up with New York in terms of raccoons,” said Burmistrom.
In recent years, the number of calls to the hotline of the Moscow City Hall related to wild animals has increased significantly. There are cases when “leopards, bears, exotic snakes, monitor lizards run around the city.”
