Moscow mayoral elections to be held on June 7

The Moscow City Duma plans to consider the appointment of the September elections of the mayor of Moscow at a plenary meeting on Wednesday, June 7. On June 5, the corresponding decision was approved by the commission for organizing the work of the Moscow City Duma. Alexei Shaposhnikov (ER), Speaker of the Moscow Parliament and Head of the Commission, recalled that, according to the law, the decision of the Duma on calling elections must be adopted no earlier than 100 days and no later than 90 days before voting day, that is, in this case, from 2 to June 12. Recall that the single voting day this year is scheduled for September 10.
On Friday, June 9, the Moscow city branch of the United Russia party will hold a conference to present the party’s candidate for the Moscow mayoral election. This was reported to journalists in the executive committee of the Moscow branch. Earlier, Kommersant reported that the current mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, will run for the first time in the upcoming mayoral elections as a candidate from United Russia, and not an independent candidate. For Mr. Sobyanin, this will be the third election of the mayor of Moscow: in 2013 and 2018, he participated in the elections as an independent candidate with the support of United Russia. According to the leader of the Moscow United Russia Party, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy, the decision of Sergei Sobyanin to run this year from the party is due to his close connection with United Russia, as well as the consolidation of society around the president and the party.
As previously reported by Kommersant, citing a source familiar with the preparations for the elections, the list of candidates for mayor of the capital in the upcoming elections will be limited only to representatives of parliamentary parties. The Communist Party of the Russian Federation is going to nominate the grandson of the party leader, Moscow City Duma deputy Leonid Zyuganov. From “Fair Russia – For the Truth” the head of the metropolitan branch of the SRZP, State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev, intends to take part in the campaign. The Liberal Democratic Party announced its readiness to nominate 31-year-old Vice Speaker of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov for mayor, and New People will nominate Vice Speaker of the State Duma Vladislav Davankov.
