The Moscow Mayor’s Office refused to allow the Memorial Society (recognized as a foreign agent, liquidated by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation) to approve the action “Return of Names”, which is held on October 29 at the Solovetsky Stone on Lubyanka Square in memory of the victims of political repressions.
In a letter from the mayor’s office, published Memorial, the refusal to approve the action is due to the effect of anti-COVID restrictions.
“I would like to clarify that if this event is held, the organizer and other participants may be held liable in accordance with the established procedure,” says the letter, signed by Deputy Head of the Security and Anti-Corruption Department Vasily Oleinik.
Instead of the traditional action, Memorial offered to bring flowers to the monuments to the victims of state terror throughout the next week, including October 29. The society recalled that in Moscow readings of names also take place on excursions of the “It’s Right Here” project.
