Rescuers evacuated more than 7.5 thousand people from areas affected by the breakthrough of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region. The evacuation of sedentary people from the hospital was carried out, the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported.
“More than 7,500 (7,525) people were evacuated from the affected areas, including 461 children and 146 people with limited mobility. 2,244 people were saved,” rescuers told the press.
Due to the lower water level, people with limited mobility were evacuated from the local hospital. They were taken by buses to a safe place.
“Through the hotline phones, the reception of applications for targeted assistance to residents who find themselves in the flood zone has been organized,” the service said.
Kakhovskaya HPP named after P. S. Neporozhny was the sixth (lower and last) stage of the Dnieper cascade of hydroelectric power plants. It was located 5 km from the city of Novaya Kakhovka, Kherson region. Kakhovskaya HPP is a large-scale project that is part of the concept of “Great construction projects of communism”, which was implemented by the USSR in 1956 on the Dnieper River. The station is one of the largest built hydroelectric power plants on the territory of the former Ukrainian SSR.
In its work, the Kakhovskaya HPP provided annual regulation of the Dnieper flow for power supply, irrigation and water supply of arid regions of southern Ukraine and navigation from Kherson to Zaporozhye.
On June 6, 2023, the hydroelectric dam was destroyed.
