More than 40 roe deer died in the Kurgan region due to an unknown disease

In several regions of the Trans-Urals, animals were seen foaming at the mouth, bleeding from their eyes, and running in circles and convulsing, several dozen sick animals died, informs Department of Rosselkhoznadzor for the Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions. A working group has been set up in the region to investigate the incident. The World Wildlife Fund said that roe deer “are not zombies”, the cause of the disease can be parasites, rabies or chemical poisoning.
According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, the death of wild artiodactyls began in September this year in the hunting farm of the Dalmatovsky district. The death of 33 roe deer was officially recorded, and more than ten diseased individuals were shot by hunters. It was not possible to establish the exact cause of the death of roe deer. Samples of the biomaterial of the dead individuals were sent for research to the Chelyabinsk branch of the Federal Center for Animal Health and the laboratory of the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Welfare in Vladimir.
“These are certainly not zombies. There can be several very real reasons for this behavior. It is possible to say for sure only after taking and thoroughly examining samples by veterinarians who deal with wild animals. These can be both parasites and poisoning with agricultural chemicals, which are now under control, or manifestations of rabies, and so on. But all these versions need to be checked, ”said Natalia Dronova, chief project coordinator of the fund for the conservation of rare species of animals (quoted by RIA Novosti).
It is preliminary known that no pathogens of infectious diseases were found in the dead roe deer.
Also, samples of land and plants were sent for research in order to exclude or confirm the possible fact of animal poisoning with chemicals and radioactive elements.
On October 23, a representative of the Federal Center for Animal Health will arrive in the Kurgan Region, and the investigation into the causes of animal deaths will continue. According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, no new cases of roe deer deaths have been registered in recent days.
