Monument to Leo Tolstoy in Odessa will be moved from the square of the same name

The authorities of Odessa will remove the monument to Leo Tolstoy from the square, which bears the name of the writer, “into a specially equipped open-air museum space.” This was announced by the director of the city department of culture Ivan Liptuga in response to a request from activists of the organization “Decommunization Ukraine”, reports the Ukrainian publication “Public”.
“The monument will be transferred from the square of the same name to a specially equipped open-air museum space in Odessa,” the letter says.
It is noted that the members of the historical and toponymic commission of the City Council made a unanimous decision on the transfer on March 16. However, the monument to Tolstoy has not yet been removed from the square, since this decision must be confirmed by the deputies of the Odessa City Council. The timing of the transfer of the bust is not specified.
In December 2022 in Odessa dismantled Monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II. The decision to remove the monuments to Catherine the Great and the commander Alexander Suvorov was adopted by the Odessa City Council in November.
Last December, a monument to writer Maxim Gorky and a monument to pilot Valery Chkalov also dismantled in the Dnieper. And in January 2023 in the city removed monument to Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. In addition, in March, the Kyiv authorities accepted the decision to rename the Kiev Pushkin Museum into the “Manor on Kudryavka”.
