In the Moscow district of Yasenevo, a monument was unveiled to Felix Dzerzhinsky, a Soviet statesman, founder and leader of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage. The monument is located next to the headquarters of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). It was opened by the head of the SVR Sergei Naryshkin. The height of the monument is 2 meters.
According to “RIA News”, the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky is a slightly reduced copy of the monument, which until 1991 was located in the center of Moscow on Dzerzhinsky Square (now Lubyanskaya Square) opposite the complex of buildings of the USSR State Security Committee. It was demolished by a crowd on August 22, 1991 after the failure of the attempted coup d’état by the State Emergency Committee.
“The image of the chairman of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission has become one of the symbols of his time. The erected monument is an exact, somewhat reduced copy of the famous monument of the outstanding Soviet sculptor, so we simply did not have the right to change the direction of the hero of this monument. And the fact that the threats to our country, our citizens from the north-west remain – yes, this is obvious, ”said Mr. Naryshkin, opening the monument.
The author of the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky was the sculptor Vladimir Ivanov. According to the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, the sculptor “did painstaking work to reproduce the image of the knight of the revolution as accurately as possible.” As Mr. Ivanov told the publication “Climb”a monument made by him “about a meter lower than the original”, located on Lubyanka Square (its height was 3 meters).
