Mongolian PM proposes constitutional reform

Prime Minister of Mongolia Luvsannamsrein Oyuun-Erdene proposed to carry out a constitutional reform in the country. He intends to discuss the transition to a classical parliamentary republic, mpress.mn reports.
Mongolia’s current constitution was adopted 31 years ago, marking the transition to a multi-party system. Now Mongolia is a semi-presidential, semi-parliamentary republic. The president is elected by popular vote, and the supreme body of state power is the State Great Khural (unicameral parliament).
“The 1992 Constitution has fulfilled its historic role of a peaceful social transition,” the Prime Minister said, proposing to objectively assess the past 30 years and determine how to live the next three decades.
Oyuun-Erdene intends to discuss the possibility of a transition to a parliamentary republic. At the same time, he believes that most of his predecessors could not initiate this earlier, “for fear of offending the president.”
There are three ways in which Mongolia is going to move forward: completely rewrite the basic law, amend the current constitution, or adjust only individual laws. The head of government proposed to submit these options for public discussion.
