The book by Eva Merkacheva is a joint project of MK and the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. It is based on real court documents, which were provided to us by court archives.
The book continues the conversation, started many years ago on the pages of MK, about the world of crime, about the people who oppose it, about eyewitnesses of the “processes of the century”, and ultimately, about our society. It recreates the events of different periods of Soviet history: the post-war years, the Brezhnev stagnation, the first years of Soviet power … Pictures of landmark trials are restored – over the “mother of all thieves of the USSR” Kalya Nikiforova, over the performer of fascist sentences in occupied Belarus Tonka-machine-gunner Antonina Makarova, over ” Queen of Gelendzhik iron Bella”, the only woman executed for economic crimes, in whose fate it is difficult not to see political overtones… Each story is accompanied by illustrations – photographs of the defendants, facsimile copies of the sheets of the cases themselves, testimonies written in different handwriting, as well as protocols and sentences, including mortals… The new book continues the humanistic line. The author does not justify the criminals and does not call for sympathy, but at the same time he tries to understand what was the root cause of the drama, the inner breakdown. Tell about how society lived in a particular period, what was the attitude of people to crime, to law as such. You can ask the author about all this.
