Scientists from MISIS University, together with colleagues from universities in China and Thailand, have developed a method for protecting information from attacks using light.
As the authors of the study explain, with quantum encryption, the user shares a special “key” with the recipient of information, which is necessary for further decrypting the message. This key is made up of a random set of bits and is transmitted in the form of single particles of light – photons. It is impossible to crack or copy this key, but it is quite possible to “attack” a facility transmitting single photons. Hackers can intercept the secret key bits with ultra-bright light, imperceptibly launched into the fiber in the direction of the source.
The scientists tried to include an additional component in the photon-transmitting installation – an insulator or a fiber-optic circulator. The beam of light will hit him first, which will reduce the power of the laser. And his strength is no longer enough to further defeat the device itself.
According to Vadim Makarov, head of the laboratory for researching the vulnerabilities of quantum cryptography systems and developing methods for their certification at the Russian Quantum Center, the developed technology will allow physicists and security specialists to protect quantum encryption from unauthorized interference.
“As a result of the work, scientists have created reliable protection against a high class of attacks,” said Vadim Makarov. — We hope that the countermeasure tested by us will be immediately applied in all industrial systems of quantum cryptography.
