Australia experienced a massive internet and mobile phone outage on Wednesday, leaving several million people without communications. The failure occurred at the country’s second largest provider, Optus. It affected hundreds of cities on the country’s east coast.
Company representatives said that technical services are working to restore the system, but the exact restoration time is still unknown. The cause of the failure also remains unclear.
Users first reported problems around 05:30 local time. They complained about the lack of Internet and mobile communications. Some users were able to access Telegram and X (formerly Twitter). Due to the failure, public transport was paralyzed, and taxi and Uber food delivery services were also disabled. The work of some banks and payment systems was also disrupted.
The Australian government said the outage affected a large portion of the country’s population, but it was not the result of a cyber attack or an attempt to hack the system. Experts believe that the cause of the failure could have been an incorrect attempt to update the system.
Optus is Australia’s second largest provider and has more than 10.2 million mobile subscribers.
