After the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall, a number of Russian regions introduced a ban on the work of foreigners in the transportation sector; this practice will soon be extended throughout the country. This was stated by the head of the “Public Council for Taxi Development” Irina Zaripova “Gazeta.Ru”.
She noted that currently only citizens of countries where Russian is the official language are allowed to drive taxis. These are Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
“Everyone else is formally not allowed. After the terrorist attack in Crocus, the bans that the regions are now introducing will become widespread,” Zaripova said.
She also noted that there is currently a shortage of personnel in the industry – in Moscow alone there are about 80 thousand drivers missing. Although this number is smaller in the regions, the problem is still acute. The shortage of personnel is due to the departure of drivers to the system of individual entrepreneurship (approximately 100 thousand taxi drivers) and strict market regulation rules.
According to Zaripova, the industry will not be “totally bad,” but such initiatives will affect the cost of services for passengers. If fares increase, customers may abandon taxi services, which will harm regional economies.
