Microsoft wanted to sell Bing search engine to Apple - Kommersant

Yesterday, American media, citing court documents reportedthat in 2018 Microsoft wanted to sell its Bing search service to Apple. The court documents were filed by Google as part of its antitrust litigation with the US Department of Justice.

Authorities accuse Google of trying to monopolize the market for mobile search engines on smartphones running Android OS and on Apple smartphones. Google, for its part, says it complied with competition rules by telling the court that Microsoft has repeatedly tried to make its Bing search engine work by default in Safari mobile browsers on iPhones. As Google notes, Microsoft made such attempts in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020, but Apple refused each time. In 2018, Microsoft even allegedly approached Apple with a proposal to either sell Bing to it or create a joint venture to jointly manage this asset. However, as Google notes, Apple has consistently rejected Microsoft’s offers. “Whenever Apple conducted a comparative analysis between the search engines Bing and Google, it concluded that the latter would be preferable to Safari users. This is competition,” Google said in a statement to the court.

Apple and Microsoft have not yet commented on these reports.
