On Monday, the Moscow City Court held a conversation between representatives of the Moscow Department of the Ministry of Justice and lawyers of the Moscow Helsinki Group. This was told to Kommersant by the executive director of the MHG, Svetlana Astrakhantseva. The meeting was an obligatory stage before the start of the trial on the claim of the Ministry of Justice on the liquidation of the MHG. Human rights activists submitted objections to the department’s demands to close the group and filed a motion to postpone the court session, Ms. Astrakhantseva explained.
Recall that the Ministry of Justice demanded the liquidation of the MHG (this is the oldest human rights organization operating in Russia; it has been operating since 1976) in December last year. As Kommersant reported, the MHG is charged with 11 violations of the law “On NGOs”, all of them are somehow connected with “going beyond the limits of territorial activity.” The Ministry of Justice believes that human rights activists of a regional organization (that is, the territory of Moscow limited in their work) did not have the right to participate even in online events organized in other cities, and even more so to attend high-profile trials outside the capital.
“We submitted our objections to the position of the Ministry of Justice and asked the Moscow City Court to postpone the meeting, since in parallel the Gagarinsky Court of Moscow registered our lawsuit to challenge the appointment of an unscheduled inspection (it was carried out by the prosecutor’s office; the results became the basis for the lawsuit of the Ministry of Justice on the liquidation of MHG.— “b”), – explained Ms. Astrakhantseva. – Whether the court will satisfy this petition is not yet clear, the decision will be announced at the first meeting on the liquidation on the merits.
According to Kommersant’s information, the first court hearing on the suit of the Moscow Department of the Ministry of Justice on the liquidation of the MHG is scheduled for January 25.
