Negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, which are taking place in Switzerland, can become the starting point for reaching a compromise between Moscow and Kiev. This opinion in conversation with “Lentoy.ru” said Nikolai Topornin, Associate Professor of the Department of European Law at MGIMO and Director of the Center for European Information.

The political scientist noted that both sides are interested in the speedy settlement of the conflict, since no one needs the deaths of people.

“They [переговоры — прим.] will be a sounding of the ground – what compromises can both sides make with a possible settlement of this conflict. Obviously, Switzerland is the best place for such negotiations,” the expert said.

At the same time, Topornin stressed that these negotiations would not be decisive in the further settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He urged not to wait for “stunning results.”

Recently, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that in Geneva negotiations are underway on the situation around the Ukrainian conflict. According to him, the meeting is held “not at a high level.”
