Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted that a number of her decisions as leader of the country provoked a split in German society.

She made the corresponding confession in an interview with Die Zeit. “I have had to deal with situations in politics that have led to differences of opinion in Germany,” Merkel said.

She named the story of Syrian refugees in 2015 as one example. Then the former German chancellor decided not to close the country’s borders for them. According to her, she made that decision out of humane considerations, and it was impossible to cancel it.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, Merkel supported an open dialogue for the sake of a speedy settlement of the conflict. At the end of last year, the former chancellor admitted in an interview with Die Zeit that the Minsk agreements were concluded to give Ukraine precious time and the opportunity to become stronger.

Merkel served as German chancellor from 2005 to December 2021. In April, she received the highest award of the country – the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in a special performance.
