Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called on Japan to recognize the results of World War II. Medvedev’s statement published in the Telegram channel of the government of the Sakhalin region.
According to Medvedev, Tokyo is pursuing a course of new militarization, which seriously complicates the situation in the Asia-Pacific Region (APR). Medvedev, in his statement, believes that Japan, with US support, is actively expanding its military infrastructure.
The country is buying foreign weapons and lifting restrictions on so-called self-defense forces and military operations abroad. Near the Kuril Islands, according to Medvedev, military exercises are taking place, complicating the situation in the Asia-Pacific region.
“Japan must learn from the history, the memorable date of which we are celebrating today, and fully recognize the results of the Second World War, do everything to prevent the fire of the third. Give up militaristic plans for the benefit of your own people,” the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council emphasized.
Medvedev made statements in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the occasion of Victory Day over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II. President Vladimir Putin signed a law according to which it is celebrated on September 3rd.
Russia and Japan do not have a peace treaty following World War II due to the protracted dispute over the South Kuriles. The state of war between the two countries was officially ended in 1956 after the conclusion of the Moscow Declaration, after which the USSR and Japan resumed diplomatic relations. According to Tokyo’s position, Russia must hand over to Japan the four southern islands of the Kuril chain (Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomai Islands). Moscow, on the other hand, recognizes the USSR declaration of 1956, which refers to the possibility of transferring the two islands after the conclusion of a peace treaty.
