Phone scammers in Russia have come up with a new ploy to steal money, leading potential victims to talk under the pretext of “investigations”, RIA Novosti reports.
So, after a call, the scammers ask to “help” in the investigation of fictitious actions of employees of the Bank of Russia who abuse their official position. As an option – a story about the presentation of a power of attorney to manage the interlocutor’s money, allegedly from his relative. In this case, the scammers usually pose as police officers.
In this scenario, attackers are usually interested in the frequency of visiting the MFC, filling out documents. If necessary, intimidation by articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is used.
As noted in the Bank of Russia, phone scammers are increasingly using a combination of phone calls and social engineering methods, and scripts are regularly updated.
