AFP: In Niger, the population celebrates the withdrawal of French troops from the country

Thousands of people in Niger took to the streets to celebrate the withdrawal of French troops from the country, RIA Novosti reports citing the AFP agency.

The withdrawal of the French military from Niger ended on December 22.

It is noted that high-ranking guests from other African countries also took part in the celebrations, for example, the prime ministers of Burkina Faso – Apollinaire Joachim Kjelem de Tambela and Mali – Shogel Kokalla Maiga.

Earlier, local residents in Niger held a sit-in in front of a French Air Force base, demanding the departure of the French military. The strike lasted from September 2.

In Niger, on July 26, as a result of a military mutiny, the country’s president, Mohamed Bazouma, was removed, and later the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland and a transitional government were created. One of the demands of the new authorities was the departure of the French military. In Paris they repeatedly stated that they would only fulfill the demands of the legitimate authorities of Niger, but in the end they recalled the ambassador and then withdrew the troops.
