Plans for the construction of a second indigenous aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy will soon be approved, while development of a third is underway, Indian Defense News reports.
Currently, the Indian Navy has 2 aircraft carriers. The first is called Vikramaditya, a heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov, built in the USSR, which, after modernization, was transferred to the Indian Navy in 2013. The second is the aircraft carrier Vikrant, first built in Indian shipyards, it was handed over to the Navy on September 2, 2022. On September 21, 2023, the Indian Navy submitted a proposal to the government to build a second indigenous aircraft carrier.
The report says that the consideration of documents for the second domestic aircraft carrier is at the final stage. As stated by the Chief of the Indian Navy Staff, Admiral Hari Kumar, initially it is planned to re-order the same aircraft carrier as the Vikrant with a displacement of 44 thousand tons, but with improved capabilities. In the future, it is planned to order a larger aircraft carrier with a displacement of 65 thousand tons, and by the time it enters service, the service life of the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya may end.
As noted, the decision to order the same aircraft carrier as the Vikrant is based on many factors, including construction time, cost and progress in the formation of the air wing. At the same time, new technologies will be introduced on the new aircraft carrier. India’s shipbuilding complex will also have to be modernized, the report said.
With reference to officials, Indian Defense News writes that India considers it necessary to ensure the presence of aviation in remote areas, such as the Strait of Malacca on the one hand and the Gulf of Aden on the other.
