Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin called the conditions for admitting Russian athletes to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris discriminatory. Violation of basic Olympic principles, he said, damages the image of the Games.
“We do not deny that participation in the Olympics is an athlete’s dream, but the conditions that are offered to us are absolutely discriminatory and run counter to the basic Olympic principles of the international sports family,” Mr. Matytsin told reporters (quoted by TASS).
He added that it is “quite difficult to limit Russia.” The USSR, which did not participate in the Olympic Games until 1952, created “one of the most powerful sports systems,” the minister continued. The current restrictions, he said, will allow the capabilities of Russian athletes to be assessed again.
Previously IOC admitted Before participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in a neutral status, eight athletes from Russia and three from Belarus. All of them passed the qualifying competitions. The committee noted that athletes who support military operations on the territory of Ukraine or “are connected with the military or security forces of Russia” will not be able to participate in the Olympics. Oleg Matytsin said that if Russians are allowed to participate in the competition, 108 athletes will be able to compete.
