The full name of Rospotrebnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare) needs to be made more modern and shorter. This opinion was expressed by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko during the plenary session of the chamber. The broadcast was on the Federation Council page in VKontakte.

Matvienko noted the important role of Rospotrebnadzor for Russia and thanked the agency for its work. According to her, Rospotrebnadzor is the “sanitary shield of the country.”

“Only the name needs to be changed, even us senators can’t pronounce it, it’s confusing. It’s a bit of a Soviet name, not modern. Let’s modernize it and make it shorter,” Matvienko addressed the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova.

Continuing to comment on the work of the department, Matvienko recalled the period of the pandemic. She noted that Russia became “one of the best countries where there were the lowest costs during the Covid epidemic and after the pandemic.” The Federation Council speaker added that this result is the merit of Rospotrebnadzor and its head.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare was established in 2004 by decree of the President of the Russian Federation. Before this, since 1993, Russia had a State Inspectorate for Trade, Quality of Goods and Protection of Consumer Rights (Gostraginspektsiya). From 2004 to 2013, Rospotrebnadzor was headed by Gennady Onishchenko. After his resignation, Anna Popova became the acting head of the department. In April 2014, she officially headed Rospotrebnadzor.
