Specialists from the Moscow Aviation University have developed a model demonstrator of a superconducting system that will make it possible to build aircraft that are quiet in terms of noise and economical in terms of fuel consumption. Aircraft created using such systems will be able to carry more than seventy passengers.
Nikolai Ivanov, head of the Department of Electric Power, Electromechanical and Biotechnical Systems at the Moscow Aviation Institute, said that the demonstrator consists of five devices – a superconducting generator and cable, a rectifier, an energy storage device and a cryogenic cooling system.
There are no such systems in the world yet. The Ascend project, which is being implemented by Airbus, can be considered a competitor,” Nikolai Ivanov specified. – So we can say that in this matter we are a little ahead of our colleagues. The first tests of this system should begin in 2023.
As the researchers explain, the developed prototype of the superconducting system is an element of the power supply or electric propulsion system for future aircraft. Reducing the level of harmful emissions can be due to the reduction of fuel consumption by the gas turbine engine and the optimal distribution of power between heat and electricity.
