According to the South African side, invitations were sent to all the heads of state of the global south, while many leaders of the countries themselves called President Cyril Ramaphosa with a request to invite them to the summit.
At the end of June, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov named Macron as an “inappropriate” guest at the upcoming BRICS summit. Then he said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already notified South Africa, which is the host of the summit, about this. At the same time, Ryabkov noted that it was “the business of the host party to determine the circle of invitees.”
The BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. It will be held in person for the first time in three years. The leaders of four states will come to it, and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the summit via video link. Directly at the summit, Moscow will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Earlier, the press service of the President of South Africa reported that Putin’s refusal to attend the summit in person was “by mutual agreement” of the parties.
