The Commissioner for Children’s Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, Maria Lvova-Belova, proposed introducing a test for knowledge of the Russian language for children of labor migrants entering Russian schools and kindergartens. According to her, this is necessary for the further integration of children.
“According to experts, about 20% of children who entered schools upon arrival in the Russian Federation do not speak Russian at all or speak at a very low level. This has a critical impact on their adaptation,” Ms. Lvova-Belova wrote in Telegram channel following the meeting of the commission of children’s ombudsmen of the CIS countries.
According to her, migrant children need to be introduced to the Russian value system and “overcome the attitude that they are isolated from Russian-speaking children” in order to avoid bullying. “And this needs to start at the stage of moving to Russia,” noted Maria Lvova-Belova.
In June, Chairman of the Presidential Council for Human Rights Valery Fadeev reported that the Ministry of Education plans to develop special courses for training teachers who work with foreign children and children who have recently become citizens of the Russian Federation.
