Luis Rubiales was quickly detained – Kommersant

The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, was detained by police on Wednesday upon returning to Madrid from the Dominican Republic. This was reported by the newspaper El Diario. The detention was related to a criminal case in which, in addition to Rubiales, there are seven more people involved. The authorities believe that Mr. Rubiales, who led the RFEF from 2018 to 2023, committed corruption violations when concluding a contract to host the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. In addition, other agreements signed by RFEF over the past five years were also subject to revision.

Rubiales spent very little time in prison. He was released almost immediately, police said. Let’s remember that Luis Rubiales’ troubles began after he kissed Spanish national team player Jenny Hermoso on the lips in August 2023 during the awards ceremony at the Women’s World Cup in Sydney (the Spanish won it). Commenting on this incident later, the football player said: “I didn’t like it, but what could I do?” As a result, Mr. Rubiales had to leave the presidency and face charges of sexual assault. At the end of March, Spanish prosecutors asked the court to sentence him to two and a half years in prison for the incident at an awards ceremony.
