Zhang Bo was sentenced to death for throwing his two young children, one-year-old Yaezhui and two-year-old Ruixue, out of the 15th floor windows of a high-rise building in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing in November 2020. His girlfriend, Ye Chenchen, was found guilty of forcing her lover to kill his children and then helping to stage their deaths as an accident.

Zhang began an extramarital affair with Ye several years ago without telling him that he was married. In February 2020, he divorced his wife, but this did not suit his new girlfriend. She believed that having children would force Zhang to eventually return to the family. E insisted that he get rid of them.

The lovers were sentenced to death in 2021, but the sentence was only carried out this week after lengthy appeals.

The couple’s crime shocked China with its cold blood and the age of the victims. Discussion of their execution topped the list of most popular topics on the Chinese social network Weibo, with almost 200 million views.
