The Lokomotiv hockey club reached the final of the Gagarin Cup for the first time in 15 years. In the match with Traktor, which took place today, April 8, in Chelyabinsk, the Yaroslavl team won with a score of 3:0, the overall series score was 4:0. KHL President Alexey Morozov congratulated the club on reaching the finals.
“It is doubly gratifying that Lokomotiv was able to achieve this result with a huge number of its students, who in 2009 just started school and just started playing hockey. Yaroslavl, see you in the final!” – he said (quote from website KHL).
In the other semi-final of the Gagarin Cup, Ekaterinburg Avtomobilist and Magnitogorsk Metallurg meet. The score in the series is 2:1 in favor of Magnitogorsk. Based on the results of their series, Lokomotiv’s opponent in the final will be determined.
The previous time Lokomotiv played in the play-off final was in 2009 and lost to Ak Bars Kazan in seven matches. After that, Lokomotiv was the bronze medalist in the 2010/2011 KHL championship season, losing to Atlant, which took second place.
The club planned to take part in the next season, but on September 7, 2011, the Lokomotiv team died in a plane crash near Yaroslavl. With a new lineup, the team returned to the KHL in 2012, but until today’s victory it had not reached the finals.
