A ban by the Lithuanian authorities on boarding and disembarking passengers from trains traveling through the territory of the republic to the Kaliningrad region comes into force, which will close another route of entry and exit from the EU for Russians.

Since March 2020, Russian Railways passenger trains have passed through Lithuania to Kaliningrad without stops for boarding and disembarking, however, technical stops at the Kena and Kybartai border stations were used by passengers for these purposes.

The Lithuanian government has decided to prohibit boarding and disembarking at these stations from March 1. Previously, access to the stations was open to passengers from Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and other countries.

The Moscow-Kaliningrad train was used by Russians as a more accessible way to cross the EU border. Russian Railways claims that Lithuania’s decision will not affect the transit of trains to Kaliningrad. Regional authorities called this a manifestation of Russophobia. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia will insist that Lithuania and the EU fulfill their obligations for unhindered transit through Kaliningrad, both for passenger and freight traffic.
