The Federal Chamber of Lawyers (FBA) of Russia announced that it awarded lawyer Alexander Nemov, who was beaten in Chechnya, with the Order “For Fidelity to the Duty of an Advocate.” It is noted that he received the order “for courage and steadfastness” in his professional work.
“FPA President Svetlana Volodina thanked the lawyer of the Chamber of Lawyers of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Alexander Nemov, for his courage and perseverance, noting that while working on the case, he traveled to the Chechen Republic 49 times. Alexander Nemov was awarded the Order “For Fidelity to the Lawyer’s Duty,” reported TASS at the FPA press service.
Lawyer Alexander Nemov was beaten on the morning of July 4 in Chechnya, where he and Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina came to attend the announcement sentence in the case of the wife of ex-judge of the Supreme Court of Chechnya Saydi Yangulbaev Zarema Musaeva. On the way from the airport, Alexander Nemov and Elena Milashina were attacked by unknown persons: three cars blocked their path, and then a group of people threw the taxi driver out of the car.
Alexander Nemov was kicked and beaten with polypropylene pipes, stabbed in the leg, his international passport and lawyer’s certificate were torn, and his assignment in the case of Zarema Musaeva, whom he was supposed to represent in court, was taken away. Him diagnosed multiple hematomas and bruises. Elena Milashina was forced to tell her the password for her iPhone, they beat her fingers, shaved her head, and doused her with brilliant green. She was diagnosed with a closed head injury, multiple fractures of the hands, and soft tissue bruises.
On the fact of beating of a lawyer and journalist excited criminal cases under the following articles of the Criminal Code: Part 3 of Art. 144 (obstruction of the professional activities of a journalist with the use of violence), Part 2 of Art. 162 (robbery committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), paragraphs “a”, “c”, part 2 of Art. 166 (wrongful seizure of a car with the use of violence), Part 4 of Art. 296 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (threat of murder, causing harm to health), Part 1 of Art. 325 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft, destruction, damage or concealment of official documents committed out of interest). The suspects in the attack have not been identified at this time.
