South Korea plans to pass a law banning the consumption of dog meat by the end of the year, Yonhap news agency writes.
Representatives of the ruling Civil Power party supported the opposition initiative to introduce a complete ban on the consumption of dog meat. Lawmakers will discuss the issue during the last session of parliament, which ends on December 9.
It is expected that the authorities will provide maximum support to dog meat producers so that they voluntarily close their businesses. Thus, a three-year grace period and financial support for enterprises are planned.
There are now 1,150 dog farms, 34 slaughterhouses, 219 distribution companies and about 1,600 restaurants serving dog meat, according to government data.
8% of the country’s population, according to surveys, ate dog during the past year.
