Lavrov: Moscow will respond to the US deployment of nuclear weapons in Europe

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his speech at the High-Level International Conference “Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in a Transforming World,” said that Russia has to resort to “compensatory measures” as a response to the deployment of nuclear weapons by the United States in Europe.
According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the result of Western policy in Europe was the destruction of the system of confidence-building measures and arms control, which includes the US withdrawal from a number of security treaties.
As the minister noted, the consequence of the forward deployment of American nuclear weapons in a number of European countries and the implementation of so-called “joint nuclear missions” is the creation of increased strategic risks.
Lavrov noted that this has an “extremely destabilizing charge,” and against the backdrop of a general increase in threats from the North Atlantic Alliance, Russia is forced to resort to “compensatory measures.”
