Latvia has closed entry for cars with Russian license plates

From 18:00 on Tuesday, September 12, the Latvian authorities blocked the entry of persons driving cars with Russian license plates into the European Union through the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian border points. This was reported by the State Revenue Service of the Baltic state.
The department clarified that the corresponding decision is based on the explanations of the European Commission on the application of anti-Russian sanctions and on the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
Persons attempting to enter the EU in cars with Russian license plates through Latvia will have to return to the Russian Federation and Belarus, respectively. Those who do not comply with this requirement and continue to try will face confiscation of their vehicles.
If we are talking about returning from EU territory to Russia in a similar car, the ban is not applicable provided that the car is not declared as a product and is a means of transportation.
Previously, the Lithuanian authorities warned that they would act in a similar way. Germany has not ruled out confiscation of all goods subject to sanctions from incoming Russians. Finland, on the contrary, refused to implement the European Union’s recommendation to ban the entry of Russian tourists in cars registered in Russia, without explaining its decision.
