The lack of graphics processors (GPU) Nvidia can slow down Yandex’s projects to develop drones and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This issue was discussed in mid-January at a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development, the government and other interested structures, a source in one of the IT companies told Vedomosti. The mechanisms that will allow Yandex to continue working with foreign vendors who have left Russia have been “repeatedly discussed at various levels,” confirms the source of Vedomosti in another large IT company.
The problem is well-known, an interlocutor in one of the specialized associations told Vedomosti: a Yandex representative warned about problems associated with a lack of hardware at a meeting of the IT working group at the RIW forum in December 2022. Now Yandex uses Nvidia chips A100 in supercomputers to improve the speed and accuracy of searches, the work of the Alice voice assistant, the Yandex.Cloud cloud platform, streaming translation of foreign-language videos and other tasks, the company’s blog says. The website of the Yandex supercomputer states that it has 1592 Nvidia A100 80G GPUs. Sber’s Christofari and Christofari Neo supercomputers have 1200 and 5600 Nvidia graphics accelerators.
