“Labor lessons should not be presented in the Soviet version” – Kommersant FM

Labor lessons will return to schools starting next school year. Changes in the program were announced by the head of the Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov. According to him, this innovation is “very important”; the department is preparing for it carefully and plans to equip educational institutions with everything necessary for teaching.
The discipline “labor” became mandatory for schoolchildren last week. Then Vladimir Putin signed the corresponding amendments to the law on education, and the State Duma adopted them in early December. Parliamentarians argued that the return of labor lessons would improve the preparation of children for adult life and instill in them a hard work ethic. “Kommersant FM” talked with teachers and found out what they think about the innovation.
History teacher Leonid Katsva: “I don’t know how this project will be implemented, because workshops in schools have been liquidated. There are no machines, there is no material base, and how all this can be prepared by September 1 is beyond my understanding.”
Historian, Honored Teacher of Russia Alexander Snegurov: “The schedule is already overloaded, students have seven to eight lessons. This leads to superficiality and negligence in relation to various subjects. When something is introduced without testing, the lessons are entrusted to a teacher who already has a workload, but we don’t have time to specifically train the person.”
Honored Teacher of Russia, Director of the capital’s school No. 109 Evgeniy Yamburg: “The school curriculum should be varied, because we have pottery production, turning, metalworking, and even subjects related to stained glass. As well as more crafty activities, there are areas that involve technology, such as children working with 3D pens. Labor lessons should not be presented in the archaic, Soviet version, when children made stools and drove nails. Of course, all this is important, but you can’t go forward with your head turned back.”
Starting next year, the authorities will make another change to the educational process. Vladimir Putin also approved it last week. Students will be prohibited from using phones in class. Now students will be able to get gadgets only in emergency situations, for example, if there is a threat to the life and health of a child or teacher.
