“Those were very difficult times. At that time in Russia everything became bad with skating rinks, there were a lot of financial difficulties, and there was nowhere to train. At the same time, there was an opportunity to train in the USA.
And then one day they invited me to America. I had to leave a lot in Russia: family, friends and go overseas with virtually nothing.
There they were provided with minimal conditions: a two-by-two-meter room without air conditioning. At the same time, the heat was 40 degrees, and there was a propeller on the table that drove hot air. And it was terrible.
Those 150 dollars that were allocated for living expenses per month were simply a ridiculous amount. It was very difficult then, I was getting into debt, but where should I go? Even if you eat on five dollars a day, it’s still impossible to hold out, because there were such colossal loads in training!
At the same time, I received many financially profitable offers to ride for another country. But I am probably a great patriot, I grew up in the Soviet Union, and I am proud of my country.
Then I had offers to play for both America and Belarus, but I refused because I saw and knew in part that I was on the right path and I wanted to achieve success by playing for the country in which I live – for Russia,” concluded Kostomarov .
