According to the skater, the support of his wife Oksana, mother and brother helped him survive the difficult process of recovery from an illness that led to partial amputation of limbs. Sports character also played a role.
“Sport strengthened me,” Kostomarov said. He noted that during his career he had become accustomed to facing difficulties, experiencing defeats and overcoming himself. He admitted that during rehab he didn’t want to feel like a loser.
The Olympic champion explained that tissue restoration, fitting of prostheses and rehabilitation took a lot of time. It took him about three months to learn to stay upright.
“The rehabilitators did not expect that I would be able to go right away,” Kostomarov recalled. He said that he walked fifteen meters on prosthetics without railings and without support.
“And when I got back on my feet, I realized that I could move on,” the skater explained.
Kostomarov shared his plans for the future with the lecturers. He intends to get behind the wheel and get back on the ice in skates to “feel what I felt before.”
