Do you know which buildings are the most common in Russia? No, these are not “Khrushchevs”. Moreover, in some places they have already been massively demolished and continue to be demolished. And don’t give. There are many of them, but not everyone wants or can build them.

We are talking about those structures that almost every one of us, with rare exceptions, has built many times. The fundamental difference is only in how often this was done. Someone built his capitally, over the years, working through every little thing. Someone – several times a day, in haste. They are called castles in the air, and the main building material is dreams and hopes.

They have been built for countless centuries, both mere mortals and royalty. Let’s take, for example, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, who, in terms of state building, is reasonably considered a dock. But 350 years ago, on June 17, 1672 *, he demanded that the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks be with him and his heirs “in eternal citizenship relentlessly.” However, somehow it did not work out with eternity.

And his heirs firmly believed that with a wave of the hand they change the fate of the country. But the dream did not always come true, if only because the royal will reached the subjects with great delays, if at all. About it – a selection “Destroy the port of Baku”.

Two hundred years ago, in 1822, platinum deposits were discovered in Russia, which turned out to be the largest in the world. Naturally, there was a desire to put the world market of this rare metal under full Russian control. But on the way to the goal there were obstacles of various nature. About them – article “Over 95% of the world’s platinum production falls on Russia”.

Castles in the air were built not only by the Russian elite, but also by its principal opponents, the revolutionaries. Moreover, they involved young people in their collective construction teams. About what happened to the Russian students of the University of Geneva who were carried away by the ideas of restructuring Russia – text “A sure way to steal your life”.

And from the towers, palaces and skyscrapers erected in dreams of the strength and unity of the Russian opposition, megacities could be assembled. But reality destroyed them with one blow. Details – in the material “The Soviet government confiscated the archive of a secret organization in Paris”.

However, the leadership of the USSR itself often made plans without taking into account the most important factors. So, 77 years ago, in August 1945, during the offensive of the Red Army on the positions of the Japanese Kwantung Army, they were going to repeat the experience of the Berlin operation with the inclusion of searchlights at night illuminating the enemy. But they did not take into account the typical forces of nature. This is our selection and the rarest photographs of those events. “We are facing an exceptionally strong ‘enemy'”.

At times, castles in the air were built for the people. How prices responded to measures to reduce them – publication “The orgy of prices is going on quite openly”.

But, of course, the most amazing thing was to see what real domestic castles in the air look like. Real ones that hovered over Red Square. And this is “Photofact” – “Every year it becomes more winged”.

About them, the most common, easily erected and quickly disappearing domestic structures, because of which they often sit in galoshes, this issue of the monthly Kommersant-History.
