The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said they would not put pressure on players playing for the teams of Russia and Belarus. The issue of impact on legionnaires will be decided by the governments of their countries. This was announced on Saturday by IIHF President Luc Tardif.
The precedent has already been set. The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation has blocked the transfer of Latvian athletes to Russian and Belarusian teams. They referred to changes in the law on sports. In Latvia, it is now forbidden to play for national teams for those athletes who play in the sports leagues of Russia and Belarus.
Back in the spring, many Western players decided to leave the KHL. According to agents, many clubs went to meet the athletes. But some wrote off huge fines from hockey players for early termination of the contract.
Recall that the International Football Federation at the beginning of March allowed athletes and coaches to suspend contracts with Russian clubs. This permit is valid until June 30 next year.
