Klitschko said that the territories that became part of Russia are no longer Ukraine

The new regions that have become part of Russia no longer belong to Ukraine, so holding elections in 2024 in these territories is impossible. This was stated by the mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko on the air of the Kyiv 24 TV channel.

“Vote? Those territories that are occupied are no longer Ukraine, because there will be no representatives,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Klitschko added that it is unclear how the Ukrainian authorities plan to take these regions into account. According to the mayor of Kyiv, voting under current conditions “would lead to the collapse of Ukraine, as politicians would begin to fight among themselves for power.”

Previously Vedomosti wrotethat the Constitution of Ukraine prohibits holding elections while the country is under martial law. At the end of July, the Verkhovna Rada extended it until November 15, which is why the planned elections to the Ukrainian parliament for October 29 were postponed. The next presidential elections in Ukraine are scheduled for March 31, 2024. If martial law is extended, they will also be postponed.

On September 30, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed agreements with the heads of the DPR and LPR, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions on the inclusion of new territories into Russia. The head of state then emphasized that residents of new regions become citizens of the Russian Federation forever.

The DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions became part of Russia following the results of five-day referendums held in these territories at the end of September 2022. The Ukrainian authorities did not recognize the voting results. Moreover, after the annexation of new regions to Russia, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on the refusal to negotiate with Russia while Putin is its president.
