Kartapolov spoke out against increasing the length of military service to two years

The head of the State Duma Committee on Defense and Security, Andrei Kartapolov, said that there is no need to increase the term of military service to two years. This is how he responded to a corresponding proposal from deputy Viktor Sobolev.

“I have already said many times: there is no need for a two-year service period for a young man. He is capable of completely mastering a military specialty in a year. For the second year, he will simply waste time, eat government food, instead of benefiting the national economy,” Andrei Kartapolov said in an interview “Gazeta.ru”. He also noted that no one in the Duma Defense Committee supports this idea, with the exception of Viktor Sobolev, who proposed it.

The day before, State Duma deputy and member of the Defense Committee Viktor Sobolev called to increase the period of military service in the army to two years in an interview with News.ru. “Soldiers must serve for at least a year and a half, of which the first six months must be trained in training units. And for the next year, or better yet a year and a half, be directly in the troops. Then our troops will be truly combat-ready,” he said.

After this statement with a similar sentence spoke Andrey Gurulev. According to the deputy, this measure would be more effective than increasing the mobilization resource. However, Andrei Kartapolov said that his colleague Andrei Gurulev “answered inappropriately” and that in fact he does not support this initiative.

The issue of increasing service life to two years was raised last October by Vladimir Dzhabarov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs. Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov twice stated that such an issue was not being considered in the Kremlin.

In December last year, the military commissar of Dmitrov, Taldom and Dubna Mikhail Fotin stated, that from the spring of this year the service life for conscripts will increase to one and a half years, and from the fall of 2024 – to two years. However, this information refuted to the Ministry of Defense.
