Kara-Murza was accused of “undesirability” for organizing a conference in support of political prisoners

A new case against politician Vladimir Kara-Murza (included in the register of individuals-foreign agents) for carrying out the activities of an undesirable organization (part 1 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code, up to six years in prison) was initiated for organizing an event in support of political prisoners. This was announced by the oppositionist’s lawyer Vadim Prokhorov on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).
The initiation of the case became known on July 27, but charges were brought against Mr. Kara-Murza in the middle of this week. As follows from the decision to implicate him as a defendant, the oppositionist is charged with “organizing and holding a conference in support of political prisoners”, which was held in the Moscow Sakharov Center on October 27, 2021. The event was timed to coincide with the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repressions, which is held on October 30. According to the investigation, the conference was paid for by the NGO Free Russia Foundation (recognized as an undesirable organization in Russia).
It should be noted that this is the first criminal case under the article on “undesirability” initiated for cooperation with the Free Russia Foundation. Previously, all cases under this article were initiated against members of the Open Russia organization (it self-liquidated in May 2021).
Now Vladimir Kara-Murza is in a pre-trial detention center on a criminal case on the dissemination of fakes about the Russian armed forces (clause “d” part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, up to 15 years in prison). According to investigators, during a speech before members of the lower house of the Legislature of Arizona on March 15, 2022, he “spread deliberately false information about the bombing of residential areas, social infrastructure facilities and the use of other prohibited means and methods of warfare by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine.” The opposition leader pleaded not guilty.
