The head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov in his Telegram channel published a video of a meeting with Nikita Zhuravel, arrested for burning the Koran. During the conversation, Nikita Zhuravel stated that he was ready to convert to Islam, but Mr. Kadyrov did not believe in the sincerity of his intentions and called him a “provocateur.” Previously, the head of Chechnya published a video of his son Adam beating Mr. Zhuravel in the Grozny pre-trial detention center.
In the video, Nikita Zhuravel says that he is “leaning” towards accepting Islam. Ramzan Kadyrov responds by saying that there is “no sincerity” in the young man’s words, and his eyes are “looking in the wrong direction.”
In the Telegram channel, Mr. Kadyrov wrote that Nikita Zhuravel “was prepared” for such conversations. He also emphasized that the arrested person, in his opinion, is an agent of the Security Service of Ukraine and decided to publicly burn the Koran “not out of ignorance or lack of knowledge, but deliberately, wanting to insult Muslims, set apart confessions in Russia, disturb that long-term peace and cross out all that the work that the Russian state and the public are doing for the sake of interreligious harmony.”
“He lied and tried to play around with other topics, again and again smoothly moving the conversation to the fact that in the future he might want to become a Muslim. The lack of firmness and certainty in intention, uncertainty, attempts to avoid direct answers revealed a real shaitan in him,” Ramzan Kadyrov emphasized, calling Nikita Zhuravel “a pronounced provocateur and saboteur, acting in the style of European intelligence services.”
16 August Commissioner for Human Rights Tatyana Moskalkova told, which received an appeal from Nikita Zhuravel, who was arrested after publishing a video of the burning of the Koran, about beating by Adam Kadyrov. She instructed Chechen Ombudsman Mansur Soltaev to look into the situation. He assured that in Chechnya “no one can be subjected to torture or beatings” and the incident will be investigated. On September 25, a video was published on Ramzan Kadyrov’s Telegram channel in which 15-year-old Adam Kadyrov beats Nikita Zhuravel. Ramzan Kadyrov stated, that he is proud of his son’s deed, since “provocateurs and traitors” are engaged in desecration of shrines. Later, Adam Kadyrov was awarded the title of Hero of Chechnya; the reasons for this decision were not given.
Volgograd resident Nikita Zhuravel published a video in March in which he burns the Koran. Soon after this, a criminal case was opened against the young man for hooliganism and violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion. At first he was under arrest in a Volgograd pre-trial detention center, then he was transferred to a pre-trial detention center in the capital of Chechnya. The investigation into the case of Nikita Zhuravel has already been completed. The trial of the accused was supposed to begin on October 9, but for unknown reasons the young man was not taken to the courtroom. Now the first hearing in the case of Nikita Zhuravel is scheduled to take place on October 13.
